This International Standard specifies requirements for the safety of Microwave Therapy Equipment used in medical practice. The minimum safety requirements are considered to provide a practical degree of safety in the operation of microwave therapy equipment. This amendment is issued to align with IEC 60601-1 series amendment projects.
The scope includes microwave devices that are used to gently heat tissue as a means to improve circulation. New uses for microwave energy include devices that are used to intentionally heat tissue to cause cell death.
The requirements are followed by specifications for the relevant tests. A "Particular guidance and rationale" section gives some explanation about the most important requirements. A knowledge of the reasons for these requirements will facilitate the correct application of the standard and will expedite any revision as a result of changes in clinical practice or developments in technology.

- Reference to IEC 60601-1 has been updated for latest available issue.
