This document describes an IP (Internet Protocol) based approach to communication between machines. It describes all relevant mechanisms between the switching layer (layer 3) and the application layer (layer 7) based on the seven-layer ISO-OSI model. The goal is to develop a secure TCP/IP-based solution that enables interoperable connectivity between different implementers and suppliers. Communication security corresponds to the Smart Meter Gateway HAN (Home Area Network) interface as described by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in TR-03109 version 1.0 and is at the same time characterised by scalability, a high degree of usability and efficient mechanisms for simple devices.
