This standard specifies requirements for hand-held gamma spectrometers, in particular for the detectors, the electronic multi-channel analysers, the identification software, the radioisotop libraries and the instrument display. It further specifies general characteristics, general test procedures, radiation, electrical, mechanical, safety and environmental characteristics. It also gives guidelines for selecting suitable isotope libraries covering radioactive materials, which have been most frequently detected by border crossings. In this standard the fact is recognized, that such instruments are mostly used by persons who are generally not radiation experts.
