Abstract:
To meet the transmission tasks arising from the pro-gressing energy transition, numerous transmission system opera-tors are planning grid expansion measures that include the instal-lation of HVDC underground cables. The thermal mass of these cables allows them to serve as a reserve capacity for curative sys-tem operations. This paper examines the potential of these thermal reserves for the effective congestion management in hybrid HVDC/HVAC systems. The objective of this paper is to develop and evaluate an advanced system operation concept that utilises the thermal reserves of HVDC cables as a new degree of freedom in curative system operation.
