Abstract:
Upcoming challenges in smart energy systems include distributed renewable energy resources that have been widespread due to their advantages over traditional generation systems. The massive penetration of static converters in distribution systems creates dynamics that can hinder or contribute to the planning, operation, and protection of electrical power systems. Grid-friendly control methodologies such as fast frequency response (FFR), present promising avenues for in-vestigation. This paper proposes a method and evaluation of coordination for a DC voltage ancillary controller with a battery energy storage system (BESS). The feasibility and good performance of the proposed method were validated through software-in-the-loop simulations for short circuits and severe load steps in a case study renewable microgrid.
