Abstract:
Compared to synchronous machines, converters have a faster dynamic behavior and require different control options. Therefore, a new method for the energy balancing concept in converter-dominated grids is needed. The voltage angle control method allows instantaneous activation of control power based on voltage angle change. This paper presents a concept for applying voltage angle control to pilot nodes in the grid. In addition to conventional voltage angle control, the pilot node approach allows a higher utilization of the power system during certain events. The approach also increases utilization and avoids overloading of transmission lines. As a case study, this improvement over conventional voltage angle control is evaluated on a modified 39-bus New England system.
