Abstract:
Hydrogen is an important component for the energy transition. For the production of hydrogen electrolysis plants are needed. Since electrolysis plants have to be scaled up in number and size new protection concepts are needed in order to ensure save and reliable service. For the development of protection concepts important criteria are the hight and the time curve of the short-circuit current. The magnitude and time behaviour of the short-circuit current are strongly dependent on the type and design of the rectifier used and are a current subject of research for electrolysis plants. This paper presents a review on short-circuit current calculation methods as well as the types and design of electrolysis plants. Subsequently, this work evaluates the calculation methods for the short-circuit current with regard to their applicability to electrolysis plants for the development of protection concepts.
