Abstract:
This study investigates the potential for repurposing onboard charging electrical power systems (OCEPS) in commercial vehicles to enhance sustainability and economic efficiency within the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Beginning with market analyses to assess demand for such innovations, the research evaluates the readiness for transitioning to repurposed OCEPS, aiming to overcome existing design limitations and improve energy efficiency and reliability. A critical examination of current onboard charger technology provides opportunities for extending the lifecycle of these chargers beyond the vehicle’s lifespan. This exploration supports the development of a sustainable business model that integrates circular economy principles, economic viability, and environmental stewardship by optimizing resource use and minimizing waste. The study proposes design enhancements to increase technical efficiency and introduces a business model that harmonizes economic and ecological objectives, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and circular economy in the electric mobility sector. The findings offer a systematic framework for repurposing onboard chargers, highlighting their potential in fostering technological advancement, economic growth, and environmental balance. This research presents a comprehensive approach to leveraging second life opportunities for onboard chargers, advocating for broader sustainability practices within the electric mobility ecosystem and addressing the challenges of electronic waste.
