Abstract:
In this research paper, the authors have implemented an adaptive distance protection scheme to achieve a selective and sensitive protection scheme considering the influence of high infeed of the distributed energy resources. Due to this change of the power infeed, the short-circuit currents and eventually the impedance increase, which leads to zone over-reaching, and thus zones of the distance protection become unselective. Here, a zone adaptation method for the distance relay with the help of communication is proposed, which adapts the distance polygons in an automated way with the help of the short-circuit measurement. The proposed solution is evaluated with case studies using the power system tool pandapower. The results with the default non-adapted and adapted settings are compared, and it is shown that the proposed method achieves a sensitive and selective tripping for all the cases.
