Abstract:
Nowadays, the rising production and use of short lifetime electronic devices, such as smart labels, Point of Care (PoC) bioplatforms and displays, results in the generation of an increasing volume of electronic waste, which is becoming a growing environmental and social problem. To tackle this fast increasing waste stream, it is necessary to implement treatment, recycling and/or re-use processes of these electronics at the end of their life [1]. In this context, paper is rising as a good alternative to those traditional materials use in short-life electronics, because it is cheap, flexible, renewable and recyclable. The EUfunded INNPAPER project aims to develop a configurable, recyclable paper-based electronic platform that will integrate different printed electronic devices, such as batteries, Near Field Communication (NFC) systems, electrochromic displays and sensors. This platform will enable the production of alternative short-life electronic devices for different sectors, ranging from smart packaging to healthcare. To demonstrate the feasibility of the configurable printed paper-based electronic platform, three real use-cases have been defined (Figure 1): - Smart labels for food packaging comprising temperature, humidity and pressure sensors with a data recording wireless system to monitor the package conditions during transport. - PoC quantitative electrochemical immunoassays for caffeine and drug (tetrahydrocannabinol) detection in coffee and saliva respectively. - PoC genetic assays for the simple and rapid diagnostic of infectious diseases. To this aim, INNPAPER project brings together leading industrial and research organizations across Europe, including paper developers/manufacturers, electronic devices developers/manufacturers, end-users and partners skilled in sustainable solutions. During the first year of the project, advances have been performed both, at paper and device level. Here, we will present the multi-site and open-access pilot-line that is being developed and the first results related to one of the above mentioned use-cases, the “PoC quantitative electrochemical immunoassays for caffeine and drug (tetrahydrocannabinol) detection in coffee and saliva respectively”.
