Abstract:
This paper analyzes the secondary spectrum availability in case of WiFi-like secondary system operating in air traffic control (ATC) radar band. The estimated amount of opportunistic spectrum depends on plethora of radar characteristics as well as on many assumptions made during the assessment. The paper summarizes the key requirements for a realistic estimation of WLAN secondary spectrum availability through a case study using the territory of Republic of Macedonia as an example study area. The analysis provides details of a modeling technique which gives an accurate spectrum occupancy prediction validated through field measurements. The paper also investigates the influence of the actual terrain, in terms of the geographical distribution and amount of acceptable WLAN positions allowed for spectrum re-use with regards to the radar location. The results prove that the exact knowledge of the radar position and its operating parameters are a necessity for providing an accurate estimate of secondary spectrum availability.
