Abstract:
In recent years the move towards the More Electric Aircraft (MEA) coupled with the prevalence of power electronic interfaced generation and loads has seen aircraft electrical systems becoming increasingly more complex. The need to achieve greater levels of performance and capitalise on technological advances has seen an increase in the level of system sophistication and interdependence. As a result of these developments an integrated approach is required for electrical systems design that considers whole system performance. A multi-objective approach to the design of an aircraft electrical network will be described that enables a range of trade-off solutions, available in the design problems under consideration, to be constructed. The primary objectives under consideration are the reduction of weight and cost, whilst simultaneously increasing electrical performance. This paper presents an overview of the research challenges associated with optimal design of aircraft electrical power systems.
