Abstract:
Metabolic profiling, i.e. the qualitative and quantitative analysis of small metabolite molecules in biomedical fluids, provides an insight into the biochemistry of living entities. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is in principal an ideal technique for metabolic profiling and is already widely applied for abundant samples, since it permits the identification and quantification of metabolites within one simple one pulse NMR experiment. Limited available sample volumes (10–100 nl) like adult haematopoietic stem cells from human umbilical cord blood - our target samples – require specially designed NMR probes. In this contribution a miniaturized NMR analysis system dedicated to such small sample amounts is presented. The integration of MEMS micro coils and RF-MEMS varactors as well as high speed sample spinning are investigated and reported.
