Abstract:
Life is the result of biochemical reactions inside single cells and their correspondence with their surroundings – the human body consists of 256 different cell types, which summarise in total to 60 trillion (10(exp12)) – therefore diseases like cancer should not be treated with chemical weapons fludding the whole body but with specific local therapies attacking only single cells with malfuntions – herefrom results the demand for therapies with submicron scale. Nanostructured drug delivery agents based on silicon compounds, polymers, liposomes, monoclonal antibodies and other materials will allow medication to be administered directly to deseased sites, allowing more effective bioavailability at lower doses with reduced side-effects. Artificial nanostructures, such as nanoparticles and nanodevices, being of the same size as biological entities, can readily interact with biomolecules on both the cell surface and within the cell.
