Abstract:
Recently, broadband services, mainly FTTH, have been popularized. Users can enjoy services using the broadband telecom network infrastructure, such as high quality video and contents download services. This trend will be accelerated because of breakthrough of IP based transmission technologies. On the other hand, functions and performance of consumer electrical products (referred to as “User devices”) have been enhanced. Especially, many devices have supported network interfaces and communication drivers. Therefore, home networks should be installed to connect these devices and to provide communication between service providers and these products. For configuration of these home networks, home gateway is one of important components. Responsibilities of home gateway are interconnection between a telecom network, such as FTTH, and a home network, and support of user device management to enhance usability, such as providing easy connectively for users, optimization, home network fault management and so on. Home network and gateway will evolve to keep up with to enhancement of telecom network infrastructure and User device. This paper addresses this point. It specifies three evolution steps, and presents features and key technologies. Especially, configuration of home network, supported interfaces and protocols in a home gateway, QoS control, and application level control are discussed.
