Abstract:
WiMax broadband MAN based on the IEEE 802.16d standard supports a new generation of fixed wireless access services with a promise to cover long distances. Inexpensive access points using the IEEE 802.11g WLAN standard are widely used to provide high performance wireless local area networks. We investigate a prototype for a WiMax- WLAN converter to explore the potential and the limitations of wireless DSL access not only from a technical point of view but also from the customer's perspective. Extensive measurements are conducted indoors as well as outdoors with a focus on the WiMax link. As a conclusion, the prototype offers a technically viable, simple and cheap wireless access network.
