Abstract:
An intelligent power supply unit with Power Management Bus (PMBus) slave capabilities is presented. Two non-isolated DC/DC voltage regulators along with analogue and digital peripheral devices are controlled by an FPGA-based manager. Several power management functions are implemented making use of a PC/104 power supply module dimensioned for medium power systems. The goal of this power conversion application is the evaluation of the feasibility and performance of digital power management functions for power supplies using the novel PMBus open-standard as a communication platform. A significant number of control, monitoring and protection functions supported by this standard have been successfully implemented and validated. The resulting VHDL power management model can be used to fabricate integrated PMBus power supplies.
