From SmartLabels to Sensor Networks

Abstract:
Smart Labels are an easy to use and easy to manufacture technology to enable physical items to interact with IT systems. They are, however, inherently limited in the form of such interactions. Enabling such labels to actively observe their environment, compute, and communicate with each other turns such a simple smart label into a wireless sensor node. Networks of these nodes provide much richer interactions and enabling entirely new classes of applications. This article gives a brief overview of opportunities and challenges.
