Abstract:
This paper is introducing and evaluating the file-repair procedure, which is designed for the MBMS download delivery method. In a cellular broadcast scenario, there is no guarantee for an error free reception even with an application layer forward error correction (FEC) scheme. The packet loss rate may exceed the correction threshold due to high mobility of the user or low signal quality at cell borders. Therefore, 3GPP has introduced another correction procedure to be used after the MBMS data transfer. It allows a receiver to contact a file repair server and to request missing file fragments. The procedure must be protected against overload situations to avoid well-known overloads such as the Slashdot Effect. This is one of the first quantitative analysis of the performance of the MBMS file repair operations with WCDMA/UMTS systems.
