Abstract:
The article discusses the difference between the socially acceptable level of fire safety for people and the protection of property according to German and EU legislation. This level of safety is compared with the methodology of the IEC 62305-2 risk management standard for lightning protection. The significance of rising construction costs and the emphasis on planning costs for unnecessary risk calculations. We discuss lightning protection in terms of personal and property safety, with a focus on risk-based approaches from fire safety engineering. The ongoing debate in Germany on lightning protection standards and their impact on building safety and cost-effectiveness will be examined. In addition, legal aspects in Germany and the EU related to lightning protection are explained. An outlook on a new approach to lightning protection risk calculations is given.
