Abstract:
This paper provides a detailed comparative study of various earth-termination system designs for an individual wind turbine, with a special focus on achieving material efficiency through enhanced lightning current discharge capabilities across a wide range of frequencies typical of lightning events, particularly in areas characterized by relatively high soil resistivity. Achieving satisfactory earth resistance levels as well as the desired impulse performance of the entire earth-termination system in such environments is a challenging task. Traditional methods may not always offer the best solution, particularly regarding the optimal use of materials and the effective channeling of lightning impulse currents into the ground. Through this analysis, the alternative designs that promise not only to meet but potentially exceed the performance and efficiency of conventional systems, thereby offering more sustainable and cost-effective solutions for lightning protection in wind turbines.
