Abstract:
Documented observations of natural lightning have allowed it to be studied extensively using various instruments. Advances in camera technology have improved the temporal and image resolution, enabling better analysis of lightning. A question that persists among scientists is whether imagery can be used to estimate the intensity of these events. This paper investigates the currents in simultaneous upward lightning strikes on two towers in Johannesburg, South Africa, employing high-speed footage and direct current measurements from one tower. The findings demonstrate a correlation between flash luminosity and measured currents, providing valuable insights for designing lightning protection systems for wind turbine farms, where such upward strikes are frequent due to the close proximity of tall structures.
