Abstract:
Modern wind turbine rotor blade manufacturing is possible with composite materials based on carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) and its different variations in manufacturing techniques, such as hybrid, pultruded and combinations thereof. The electrical semiconductive properties of CFRP change the blade’s frequency response against lightning and therefore the Lightning Protection System (LPS) design should be coordinated carefully taking these properties into account. The aim of this work is to present a comparison between the traditional fully coupled PI-Model and the Bergeron’s advanced transmission line model applied to rotor blades’ electromagnetic analysis for different types of lightning strokes classified in the norms IEC 61400-24 Ed. 2.0 (2019) and JIS C 1400-24:2023, such as the first positive and subsequent short strokes.
