Abstract:
This paper discusses a time-domain methodology that can be used to calculate lightning-induced voltages on overhead lines considering lossy transmission line models available in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation programs. The validity of the methodology is demonstrated by means of comparisons with a classic finite-difference time-domain solu-tion (FDTD) of telegrapher’s equations in the presence of external electromagnetic fields. Application examples are given for generic load terminations, including surge arresters and transformers. It is shown that the proposed methodology can be efficiently and accurately used to calculate lightning-induced voltage on overhead lines.
