Abstract:
Control of flux in magnetic circuits, especially in those with permanent magnets, can be an option to achieve magnetic actuators without the constant generation of power loss as for example in solenoids. To this end, the variable reluctance of magnetic shape memory alloys (MSM) is considered here. The impact of design parameters of the stick and its immediate surroundings alongside an idealized limit are examined using lumped-model and FEA simulation approaches. The air gap in which the MSM-stick is set and the shape of the stick that deviates from conventional geometry are found to be of particular interest, while the low magnetic saturation of the alloy is found to be a limiting factor. Concluding, a brief assessment on the application of this concept in systems is given.
