Towards Integrated Tamm Plasmon-Polariton Thermal Emitters

Abstract:
We describe the progress, challenges and future potential in the field of on-chip integration of waveguide-emitter systems for optical absorption sensing in the mid-infrared spectral region. In particular , we review the application of the concept of so-called Tamm plasmon-polariton emitters (TPEs) and their on-chip integration as sensor component. It is crucial to increase the efficiency of those components, as their extreme miniaturization decreases the device perfomance. The resonant nature of TPEs allows a tailoring of the thermal emission spectrum as well as efficient coupling to sensible waveguides suitable for absoprtion gas sensing. This review specifically focuses on CO2 gas sensing.
