Abstract:
We describe and compare several techniques for the development of an optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) based on hot atomic vapor that should ultimately be applicable for medical diagnostics purposes. In addition to providing a theoretical description of the OPM dynamics and the overall working principle, fundamental quantum mechanical bounds are discussed that limit important performance criteria of the atomic magnetometer, e.g., the sensitivity or the bandwidth. There are several ways to implement an OPM, many of which are applicable in different situations. Here, we limit ourselves to the demonstration of a Mx-magnetometer setup that is used to determine experimental parameters.
