Abstract:
In the context of the ongoing energy transition DC technology is experiencing a significant implementation in power system applications. In distribution systems, however, the integration of DC equipment is not yet fully established. One reason is the difficulty of quantifying the overall benefit of a DC section’s multitude of possible use cases, as concepts and methods for their coherent combination within one operational strategy are still lacking. Therefore, this concept paper proposes an optimal power flow based method for optimized multi-use case setpoint definition for converters connecting DC sections to the existing AC distribution system. This method provides a systematic approach to multi-use case operation and includes the quantification of different operational goals in dependency of the power system state. In this way an optimal operational strategy is defined, the evaluation of which can give an indication regarding the overall benefit of a specific DC section for the corresponding distribution system operators. The presentation of the concept is complemented by the definition of further upcoming research tasks, which are planned to refine and test the method and enable a practical application. The elaboration of the method is preceded by a brief review of DC technology in power systems in general and a more detailed discussion of topologies and use cases for hybrid AC/DC distribution systems.
