Abstract:
Robotic cell designs can be highly complex, and it is not always obvious from schematics and drawings how equipment will look once physically installed. During the entire creation process, from design to commissioning, the team must consider a variety of elements to make sure that the final solution will meet the expectations and fit within its environment. Interestingly, commissioning represents only 25% of the development time however, up to 70% of delays on projects are due to errors in the control software (Hoffmann et al. 2010, Reinhart and Wünsch, 2007). In addition, companies are not immune to other errors and often discover new issues during the commissioning phase such as collisions or faulty human / machine interactions. Investing in new manufacturing equipment is a significant investment for companies and a big factor in their growth reminding us that commissioning is a crucial part of the industrial process. There are massive gains to be made in the engineering phase from reducing errors, to facilitating the choice of the right solution while maintaining compatibility with existing production lines and specific environments that require seamless and rapid delivery. This is where new technologies such as augmented reality and virtual commissioning can massively add value.
