Abstract:
Polarimetric signatures in L-band data measured by the spaceborne SAR sensor ALOS-2 are correlated with typical forest parameters derived by airborne laser scanning via single-tree segmentation and classification over a test site within the Bavarian Forest National Park. Forest parameters like tree species, tree height, crown volume, or crown base height gathered over a small part are transferred to the complete coverage by satellite-based SAR polarimetry. Three classifiers are trained, applied to the Multi-SAR-processed Kennaugh elements. The observed distinct correlations provide the basis for an in-deep examination of the polarimetric, temporal, and spectral signature of mid-European forests in near future.
