Abstract:
Innovative operational concepts aiming at a higher loading of the electrical grid lead to new challenges regarding system stability. Due to the high computational effort for detailed stability analyses, it is not possible to assess all combinations of use case and fault scenarios. The analysis of representative contingencies, which are identified based on conventional load and generation time series, does not necessarily include all critical fault scenarios. Hence, this paper presents an approach to improve the identification of critical contingencies based on additional indicators resulting from preliminary stability assessments. For instance, short-circuit calculations and simplified voltage stability evaluations are carried out. In exemplary results based on an European transmission grid model, it is shown that these additional indicators can be utilized to identify critical contingencies, which were not identified by conventional time-series analyses.
