Abstract:
Virtualization and new cloud-based concepts such as network slicing enable 5G to support a wide variety of applications in dynamic ways. Many of these applications will be critical in the sense that human lives will depend on the availability and integrity of these applications and the underlying network infrastructure. Consequently, protecting 5G networks against cyber-attacks is of fundamental importance. Implementing the security architecture for mobile net-work functions as standardized by 3GPP is an essential pillar for building highly secure and reliable 5G networks, but also carefully protecting the cloud infrastructure and the virtualized network functions as well as securing the highly dynamic network operations require adequate attention. This paper discusses these three areas, with a focus on the 3GPP 5G security architecture.
