Abstract:
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) provides relevant information about the stratigraphy of the snow pack. The elaborative pointwise measurements are only provided along tracks. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) offers two-dimensional information about snow cover and snow type. Multi-frequency SAR data delivers information about the stratigraphy of a snow pack due to their different penetration depths. Our idea is to correlate the backscatter of GPR tracks and multi-frequent SAR (TerraSAR-X, Sentinel-1, ALOS-PALSAR-2) data acquired in spring 2016 and 2017 of the Vernagtferner, Austria and to extrapolate the gained information to the whole snow cover.
