Abstract:
The effect of the background ionosphere on the traversing signal can be modelled as a function of Slant Total Electron Content (STEC). For Geosynchronous Synthetic Aperture Radar (GEO SAR), the integration time is very long. Therefore, the variation of STEC during the integration time is considerable, which may introduce notable distortions into GEO SAR azimuth-imaging. It is shown that the main motivation can be divided into three aspects: varying traversing-paths, temporal variations and spatial variations of the background ionosphere. A brief analysis of this issue covering all these factors is presented in this paper.
