Abstract:
In this paper we evaluate the impact of variable channel rates on the design of multilayer IP over WDM networks in a multiperiod network planning approach. After a short summary of the technology options for optical networks with flexible WDM grid, we present current software-defined optical interface technologies implementing these options. Next we introduce planning strategies for multi-line rate IP over flex-grid optical networks based on an auxiliary graph model. Finally, we discuss the impact of higher grooming capacity and variable channel rates on multi-period planning of multiple network layers, specifically IP over WDM. The planning approach is validated in a network study with reference network scenarios analyzing the impact of link lengths and grooming threshold to install bypass grooming links.
