Abstract:
The Smart Grid is a communications-based sharing of information among the operating and management functions across the utility enterprise to improve reliability, optimize performance and energy efficiency, and reduce costs. The bulk of industry discussion has focused on distribution functions and on interaction of the distribution system with energy users and with distributed energy resources, but sophisticated intelligent wide area control of the transmission grid is also a key element of Smart Grid. This paper focuses on a centralized transmission Smart Grid concept – wide area monitoring (or measurement), protection, automation, and control (WAMPAC).
