Abstract:
A next generation SAR/MTI radar system, called SmartRadar (Scalable multipurpose aerospace radar technology), has recently been developed at CASSIDIAN. All sensor components including Radar Core, AESA Antenna, Onboard Processor, and Data Recorder are integrated in a Pod which is mounted under the wing of a Learjet 35 aircraft. The pod is flight certified and was successfully operated during two flight campaigns in 2011. The SmartRadar system has the potential to cover future requirements by provision of multiple wide bandwidth channels and by the capability to support a variety of different programmable modes including simultaneous SAR/MTI operation. It is also aimed for integration into a UAV system. The paper gives an overview of the pod system including the operator console mounted in the cabin and shows the operation of the system as well as several results.
