Abstract:
There are numerous storage technologies. When discussing the optimum solution for electrical energy storage systems according to the technical potential to serve services to the grid, the various technologies are often not sufficiently differentiated. Therefore, the paper describes a classification of storage technologies with regard to three different parameters which reflect their ability to serve the grid with stability. The classification is motivated by the services, not by technical issues of the storage technologies. In addition we also analyse competing technologies which can deliver the same services for the grid. The service which storage systems offer to the grid is positive and negative control power for different periods of time. We will show that positive and negative control power can be delivered also by other technologies. For the analysis of the market volume of storage systems and to understand the operational costs which need to be achieved to be competitive on the market it is most important to do the presented analysis at the very beginning.
