Abstract:
SAR imagery of urban scenes will contain not only the bright radar returns from the buildings but also the radar shadows cast by the buildings. Whilst these radar shadows can have a detrimental effect by obscuring areas of the scene, there is also a beneficial effect which is to provide information about the shape of the building that has caused the shadow. In this paper, a statistical analysis of building dimension estimates obtained from shadows is performed. This provides a theoretical framework within which classification performance based on dimension estimates obtained from shadows can be predicted.
