Abstract:
Communicating cars are expected to form an essential part of future traffic safety and traffic management systems. Many national and international projects treat the specification and implementation of new car communication technologies, whereas most ongoing activities focus on a realization with mobile ad-hoc networks based on Wireless LAN (802.11). Motivated by the German public funded project Cooperative Cars (CoCar), this paper presents the realization of automotive data services based on UMTS. One exemplary cooperative car application is selected in order to highlight the potential of UMTS for realizing automotive data services.
