Abstract:
In this paper, we describe the implementation of iterative channel estimation in time and frequency domain for the Minimium Mean Square Error Interference Canceler - Linear Equalizer (MMSE IC-LE) turbo equalizer. The implementation was done on a 32-bit fixed point TI TMS320C6201 Digital Signal Processor (DSP). Channel estimation is done using the Least Squares (LS) and the suboptimal Channel Sounding (CS) methods in time and frequency domains. Initial estimate for the channel state information (CSI) is calculated using a known training sequence inserted at the beginning of each frame and subsequently, the channel estimate is improved upon by taking advantage of the iterative process of the turbo equalizer. Simulations are carried out for transmission over the time-invariant Porat and Friedlander (P&F) and the time-varying quasi-static EQ5 channels and the performance of the equalizer in terms of bit error rate (BER) is compared for the two cases.
