Abstract:
Performance of a newly developed hydrophobic cycloaliphatic epoxy resin was compared to a standard outdoor epoxy and a silicone rubber in a combined aging test. Electrically energized post insulators with identical geometry made of the three materials were exposed to a cyclic test comprising of salt fog atmosphere in alternation with UV irradiation. Evaluation criteria were leakage current activity (maximum and effective currents, accumulated charges and pulse counts), erosion damages and hydrophobicity loss during and recovery after the 1082 hours of this treatment. The ability of the hydrophobic epoxy to suppress leakage currents was clearly better than that of the standard outdoor epoxy and that of the tested silicone rubber. For silicone this study in addition compares two different geometries with almost same creepage length.
